OSR #1 Update

On 18 June 2010, the FDA wrote to CTI Science questioning whether OSR#1® fit within the agency’s definition of a dietary supplement, indicating that instead it appeared to be a drug.  Although we believe the product meets the legal definition of a “dietary supplement,” we have decided not to contest this point but to work with the agency.  While achieving formal drug approval is lengthy and costly, CTI Science will in the course of it prove to FDA’s satisfaction the safety and efficacy of OSR#1® and ultimately be able to offer OSR#1® to the public with FDA-authorized therapeutic claims.

As a result of this decision, CTI Science has voluntarily agreed to remove OSR#1® from the market effective Thursday, 29 July 2010.  The product will not be available for sale after that date until new drug approval has been obtained.  Please access the CTI Science website, www.ctiscience.com, for updates on OSR#1® in the future.

Testing

Immuno Labs Bloodprint

As we start our journey towards recovery, it is vital to eliminate what harms in terms of food. It has been estimated that 90% of immune reactions to foods are non-IgE, or delayed symptom onset food allergies. A single blood test can identify food specific IgG antibodies and thus identify patients’ food sensitivities. Sensitivities to food also impact the autoimmune system and exacerbate neurobehavioral function. In addition, IgG food sensitivities can cause antibody production, increased inflammation, lymphocyte responses, cell damage, and generation of cytokines such as TNF-alpha [Vodjani A et al].

An IgG food sensitivity test is a great starting point when putting together an adequate diet for you or your child. IgG Environmental sensitivities can also be tested for if appropriate clinical findings are present. For more information please visit Immuno Labs.

Nutrigenomic Testing

The field of nutrigenomics is the study of how different foods can interact with particular genes to decrease the risk of diseases. Biomolecular nutrigenomics takes this concept a step further, analyzing the molecular signaling pathways that are affected by specific single site base changes and then utilizes combinations of nutrients, foods and natural ribonucleic acids to bypass mutations and restore proper pathway function.

A central pathway in the body that is particularly amenable to biomolecular nutrigenomic screening for genetic weaknesses is the methionine/folate pathway. As a result of this decreased activity in the methylation pathway, there is a shortage of methyl groups in the body, which would otherwise serve a variety of important functions.

Methyl groups are “CH3" groups that are moved around in the body to turn on or off genes. There are several particular sites in this pathway where blocks can occur as a result of genetic weaknesses. Supplementation with appropriate foods and nutrients will bypass these mutations to allow for restored function of the pathway.

Understanding the intrecuit biochemistry of the urea, tetrahydrobiopterin, folate, and methylation cycle plays an important role in giving efficient supplementation protocols and decreasing and addressing episodes of regression that are so common in autistic children. Optimal Nutritional Evaluation (ONE)

It is difficult to wade through the sea of nutritional supplements that are currently offered. It is also difficult to know your child’s deficiencies and how to address them.

The ONE will help you understand your patients' individual diet and supplementation needs. This panel includes key organic acids to evaluate gastrointestinal function and functional need for vitamins, minerals, and co-factors. In addition, amino acids are measured to assess digestion, absorption, metabolic impairments, and nutritional deficits. Anti-oxidant reserves and the presence of oxidative injury are analyzed. For more information please visit Genova Diagnostics.

NutrEval

NutrEval is a comprehensive nutritional evaluation to identify specific imbalances of vitamins, nutrients, and essential co-factors. This profile also provides assessment of gastrointestinal dysfunction and detoxification impairment. For more information please visit Genova Diagnostics.

Neurotransmitter Assessment

Medical research has established a definite link between neurotransmitters and a number of conditions. It has been concluded that deficient or excessive neurotransmitter levels may be at the root of many of these conditions. Therefore, the ability to assess the levels of various neurotransmitters offers healthcare providers a useful tool in addressing neurotransmitter-related conditions.

CDSA

The Comprehensive Stool Analysis (CSA)is an invaluable non-invasive diagnostic assessment that permits practitioners to objectively evaluate the status of beneficial and imbalanced commensal bacteria, pathogenic bacteria, yeast/fungus. Precise identification of pathogenic species and susceptibility testing greatly facilitates selection of the most appropriate pharmaceutical or natural treatment agent(s).

Impairment of the highly specific nutrient uptake processes, or compromised GI barrier function (as in “leaky gut syndrome”) can result from a number of causes including: low gastric acid production, chronic maldigestion, food allergen impact on bowel absorptive surfaces, bacterial overgrowth or imbalances (dysbiosis); pathogenic bacteria, yeast and related toxic irritants, and the use of NSAID’s and antibiotics. Impairment of intestinal functions can contribute to the development of food allergies, systemic illnesses, autoimmune disease, and toxic overload from substances that are usually kept in the confines of the bowel for elimination.

Heavy Metals

Analysis of the levels of toxic metals in urine after the administration of a metal detoxification agent is an objective way to evaluate the accumulation of toxic metals. Acute metal poisoning is rare. More common, however, is a chronic, low-level exposure to toxic metals that can result in significant retention in the body that can be associated with a vast array of adverse health effects and not chronic disease.
